Gary Soto is a well-known Latino author whose friendly style and interest in everyday experiences make his writing accessible and enjoyable. Readers from all cultures and ethnicities find it easy to relate; Spanish speaking students may discover an affirming model. The texts included in this course reflect the range of Soto's work--poetry, autobiography, short stories, and chapter books. Some are written for young children, while others are more suitable for older readers. Participants will be asked to read and respomd to the short paperback texts and to design ways to use selections from Soto's work to inspire their students to read and write with joy. Teachers may complete this course with or without students. Grades K-12.
