Did you know that Isaac Newton was inspired to study mathematics after a fight with the school bully? Or that Descartes made a great discovery by watching a fly or that Blaise Pascal made one of his greatest discoveries because of a toothache? The stories behind mathematical discoveries are fascinating. Incorporating them into mathematics teaching sparks students interest and motivation.

This course, consistent with national standards, is designed to help teachers of grades 3-12 show the human dimension of mathematics while teaching critical thinking, pattern recognition, and a variety of problem-solving techniques. Texts include classroom ready activities as well as easily accessible biographical information. This course may be completed with or without students. Texts also used for Mat 913. Ask instructor about refund.
