While teaching algebraic thinking in the primary grades is receiving increased attention in elementary school mathematics, many primary teachers are uncomfortable with the idea of teaching “algebra” to young learners. Some may question their own understanding of algebraic concepts. Strategies for introducing young learners to algebraic thinking may not be readily available to teachers, and textbook programs may not provide sufficient exploration of the concepts.
This course will introduce primary teachers to the building blocks of algebraic thinking. It will suggest interactive and engaging activities designed to support student understanding of early algebra concepts. Teachers will also find that many of the activities and lessons suggested will support and enhance their current mathematics instruction.
Teachers may complete this course with or without students. (Grades K-2)
